Wildebeest and zebras. Herd of blue wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus),or brindled gnu, crossing a river. A herd of zebra (Equus sp.) are drinking at the riverbank. Many of the wildebeest will not survive this crossing. They will either drown or be eaten by waiting crocodiles. These animals inhabit the plains and woodlands of south-eastern Africa, grazing on fresh grass. Wildebeest are social animals, living in herds numbering several thousands of individuals, especially when migrating great distances to reach fresh pasture. Both sexes grow short curved horns.
