African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) herd moving across grasslands. The buffalo is a large herbivore which lives in vast herds of up to 2000 individuals, but more commonly just a few hundred. They live throughout Africa south of the Sahara desert. A fully grown adult may weigh 1000 kilograms. They eat mainly grass, although leaves and shoots are also eaten. Buffalos live near forests and water, and retreat into them during the hot parts of the day. Their size and strength make them formidable prey, even for lions | |
