Female red deer (Cervus elaphus) or doe. Female red deer spend most of the year in a single sex herd governed by a dominant female, usually the mother of the other herd members. During the breeding season in the autumn, hinds and stags (males) come together, with the stags competing with each other for dominance of the breeding grounds. The red deer is found throughout much of the Northern Hemisphere, and is known as the elk and the wapiti in other parts of its range. In the UK it is the largest native land animal, and a male can stand nearly two metres tall. Photographed in South-West England | |
