Mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) in a clearing. This deer lives in the mountains and deserts of western North America, from Canada to northern Mexico. It forms large herds in the winter months during its migration from the mountains to lower areas. It eats a huge variety of vegetation, taking practically any plant it finds. It is an important prey animal for the larger carnivores in its range, such as mountain lions, lynx and wolves. An adult mule deer may reach a length of up to two metres and live for over ten years in the wild. Photographed in British Columbia,Canada | |
