Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) yawning in water. Hippos are large water-loving herbivores. They live in and around rivers throughout eastern and southern Africa. They spend the majority of the day resting in water and grazing on water plants. At night they leave the water to eat fruits and grasses on the land. Hippos live in groups of around 15 individuals,although larger groups have been seen. Hippos may reach over five metres in length,and can weigh up to 4500 kilograms.
