Warthogs (Phacochoerus aethiopicus). Male warthog testing the oestrus state of a female warthog at a watering hole. The warthog is a relative of the pig that inhabits the savannahs and plains of sub- Saharan Africa. It is important that there is a source of water in its territory for drinking and wallowing in. Both males and females reach sexual maturity at eighteen months. Warthogs mate during the rainy season, but females are only in oestrus,or heat, for three days. If mating is successful the female will give birth to a litter of between two to five piglets, after a six month gestation period. Photographed in Mkhuzi,South Africa | |
