White rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) being sprayed against parasites. The white rhinoceros is the second largest land animal after the elephant, weighing up to 3600 kilograms. It is a herbivore that lives in grasslands and savannahs, using its broad lips to graze. The white rhinoceros was hunted to near extinction at the end of the nineteenth century,as in Asia its horn is thought to be an aphrodisiac. However, due to conservation efforts it is now the most abundant rhinoceros in southern Africa. Ectoparasites, such as ticks, are a common problem for rhinoceroses as they often carry disease.
