White rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) female urinating. Both male and female white rhinos are territorial and spend almost their entire life on a home range. In the male (bull),spraying urine is one way to mark territory, which he defends from rival males. This female (cow) does not place such a high regard on her territory, which may overlap with the ranges of several males. The white rhinoceros inhabits the open forests and scrub of south-eastern Africa, feeding mainly on shoots and leaves. Extensive hunting for its horn, which is used in traditional medicine, means that it is now endangered. Photographed in the Mkuzi Game Reserve,South Africa | |
