Black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis). This large herbivore inhabits the open forests and scrub of south-eastern Africa. It is a solitary, territorial animal, its territory always including at least one waterhole,as it is fond of wallowing. It eats mainly shoots and leaves, although its diet also includes tree bark. The black rhino is renowned for its aggression, and it will charge anything it perceives as a threat. Extensive hunting for its horns, which have long been thought of as an aphrodisiac, means that it is now highly endangered. Photographed in the Augrabies Falls National Park,South Africa | |
