Burchell's zebra (Equus burchelli),eating supplementary food during a severe drought. Burchell's zebra, also known as the plains zebra,is found throughout south-eastern Africa on savannahs and grasslands. It eats a wide variety of grasses and is often the first grazer to colonise areas of longer grass. It is a social animal that lives in small family groups comprising an adult stallion, mares and their foals. Many family groups come together to form herds. During severe drought much of the grass that the zebra would feed on dies. To prevent starvation and death gamekeepers may provide supplementary food. Photographed in Zambia | |
