African elephant calf (Loxodonta africana) standing between the legs of an adult. An elephant calf is born after a gestation period of around 22 months,and nurses from its mother for a further 3 years. These elephants are the world's largest land animal,weighing up to 10,000 kilograms and measuring 3.5 metres in height. They are social herbivores that roam central and eastern Africa.
