African elephants. Herd of African elephants (Loxodonta africana) walking along a river bed. These social herbivores inhabit the savannah and forests of sub-Saharan Africa. They live in large family groups or herds, which are ruled by an elderly matriarch. Herd members communicate using a wide variety of low frequency sounds that can travel great distances through the environment. African elephants are the largest land animals, some individuals reaching up to 7000 kilograms in weight. Photographed in the Mala Mala Game Reserve,South Africa | |
