African elephant (Loxodonta africana) drinking at a waterhole. The African elephant drinks daily, sucking up water with its trunk and then squirting it into its mouth. It also enjoys bathing in and around waterholes, covering its skin with mud for protection from the Sun. This social herbivore inhabits the savannah and forests of sub-Saharan Africa, living in family herds ruled by an elderly matriarch. It is the largest land animal, adult males reaching up to 7000 kilograms in weight. Photographed in the Etosha National Park,Namibia | |
