African elephant (Loxodonta africana) standing amongst dead trees. The African elephant often uses its immense weight to push down trees to feed on the uppermost leaves. It is a social herbivore which inhabits the savannah and forests of sub- Saharan Africa. Groups are ruled by an elderly matriarch.
