Antarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella) pup. Female fur seals give birth to their pups in November and December on rocky Antarctic and sub-Antarctic coastlines. The pups have a dark brown-black fur coat when they are born, but moult after two to three months to a silver- grey colour. The mother seal leaves her pup for up to five days at a time to feed on krill, squid and fish. She returns for one or two days to nurse the pup before leaving again. The pup becomes independent after about four months. Photographed on Macquarie Island,Antarctica | |
