Cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus) female attacking a pup. A newborn pup weighs between 4.5 and 7 kilograms and is 60 to 70 centimetres long. It is dependent on its mother's milk for the first six months. After this it can swim and catch its own food. The Cape,or South African,fur seal feeds primarily on fish and shellfish. It forms large colonies on the coasts of Namibia and South Africa. Males hold large territories containing several females and their pups.
