Weddell seal (Leptonychotes weddelli) basking on rocks. This gregarious seal species inhabits fast ice (ice attached to land or the Antarctic ice shelves) around Antarctica and subantarctic islands. It is protected from the cold by a thick layer of blubber. It scrapes breathing holes in the ice with its specially adapted teeth. It hunts in a range of up to 3 kilometres from its air hole,feeding on fish,crustaceans,squid and krill. It can reach up to 3.3 metres in length and 400 to 600 kilograms in weight.
