Antarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella) blonde male (bull). A blonde or white seal lacks pigment in the outer guard hairs of its fur coat. It is not a true albino though,as the eyes and skin are still pigmented. A normal fur seal is at left. The male is 1-2 metres in length and 60-120 kilograms in weight. It also has a mane of shoulder fur. Some males stay near to shore all year round, feeding mostly on krill in shallow waters around subantarctic islands. During the breeding season, males compete for a territory and a harem of 4-5 females. Photographed on Bird Island,South Georgia, southern Atlantic Ocean | |
