Meerkats (Suricata suricatta). Meerkat adult with a pup. The meerkat gives birth to between two and four young after a gestation lasting around two and a half months. It is a social animal which lives in large colonies in extensive underground burrows. It often stands on its hind legs,as seen here, which permits it to survey the area around its territory for approaching predators. S. suricatta is found throughout the arid, open plains of South Africa. Photographed in the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park,South Africa | |
