American black bear. View of an American black bear (Ursus americanus) in a cave on a cliffside. They are sometimes known as "Kermode's glacier bears". A fully grown American black bear has a body length of 150-180 cm and a body weight of 120-150 kg. They are basically vegetarian in nature,but will eat meat if necessary. American black bears are solitary animals,they are active during the day and at night. They are not true hibernators but they going without food for up to seven months and res through the winter.
