Whale's tail raised above the water as the whale dives. The tail fins of a whale are called flukes. The notches and colours of a whale's flukes vary greatly, and can be used to identify individuals. Photographed at the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. Stellwagen Bank is an underwater plateau off the north-eastern coast of the USA,in Massachusetts Bay. As the glaciers retreated at the end of the last Ice Age,they left behind sand and gravel that was drowned by rising sea levels to form Stellwagen Bank. The conditions are ideal for whales and a diverse ecology of other marine life. Several different whale species can be seen in this area | |
