Humpback whale's blowholes. The humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) has 2 nostril-like blowholes on the top of its head. They are connected to the animals lungs by a trachea (windpipe). While underwater flaps close the holes to prevent the intake of water. The humpback whale is found throughout the world's oceans and is a migrant, spending the winter in tropical waters, where it breeds and gives birth. For the rest of the year it inhabits colder waters, where it feeds on fish and krill. Adult humpback whales weigh around 27 tonnes and can reach 15 metres in length.
