Humpback whale's flipper. This whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) often holds its flipper out of the water before beating the surface with it,possibly as a form of communication. Its flippers can reach 5 metres in length and are the largest appendages of any animal. It is found throughout the world's oceans and is a migrant, spending the winter in tropical waters, where it breeds and gives birth. For the rest of the year it inhabits colder waters, where it feeds on fish and krill. Adult humpback whales weigh around 27 tonnes and can reach 15 metres in length.
