Northern right whale. Tail flukes of a northern right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) that is diving. This whale, found in the northern Atlantic Ocean, reaches a length of up to 18 metres. It is a filter-feeder,using the plates of baleen attached to its mouth to filter small marine animals, such as krill and copepods, from the water. As this whale often travels on the surface and is slow- moving,it was easily hunted and gained its name because it was considered the right whale to hunt. The numbers of this endangered whale remain low. Photographed in the Bay of Fundy, off Nova Scotia,Canada | |
