Beached whales. Coloured historical artwork of people studying a bowhead whale (left,Balaena mysticetus) and a sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) beached on a shore. The sperm whale is found in oceans throughout the world between 70 degrees North and 70 degrees South. It only has teeth on its lower jaw. The bowhead whale lives in the icy oceans of the northern hemisphere. Instead of teeth it has bristly baleen plates that can reach over four metres in length,a record for baleen whales. This artwork is from a German encyclopaedia called the Bilder-Atlas,which was published in 1860 | |
