Capybaras. Group of capybaras (Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris) resting in vegetation. These animals are the largest rodents in the world, measuring up to 130 centimetres in length and weighing up to 80 kilograms. They inhabit dense vegetation near water in South America, east of the Andes. They have webbed feet and are proficient swimmers. When threatened they flee to the water and hide beneath it,often with only their nostrils above the water. Capybaras are social animals, living in groups numbering around 20 individuals. They are herbivorous, mainly grazing on grasses, but also eating aquatic plants, grains and fruits. Photographed in the Amazon rainforest,Ecuador | |
