Agouti feeding. View of an agouti (Dasyprocta leporina) feeding in grass. This large rodent is active during the day, except for areas in which its habitat has been disturbed by human activity, when it is totally nocturnal. It inhabits the forests and savanna of northern South America, eating a variety of foods, including fruit, seeds, grass and roots. It spends much of its life underground in a complex series of chambers and tunnels, which typically lead directly to sources of food. The agouti can reach over 60 centimetres in length, and is a favourite prey animal for a variety of carnivores. Photographed at the La Selva Biological Station,Costa Rica | |
