Hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas). Troop of hamadryas baboons basking in the dawn sun. These baboons are social animals which inhabit the plains and forest edges of eastern Africa. Troops can comprise over 100 individuals, including males, females and young. Troops have a strict hierarchical order, and are led by dominant males. Baboons are active by day, retreating to high branches at night to protect themselves from nocturnal predators, especially the leopard. Baboons mainly eat plant matter, but small monkeys, young gazelles and bird's eggs are taken on occasion. They do not avoid humans and often raid plantations.
