Baboon (Papio sp.) with young sitting on a tree branch. Baboons are the largest members of the monkey family. The female usually gives birth to a single offspring after a gestation period of 6 months. They inhabit savannah and open woodland across Africa. Baboons mainly feed on vegetation and seeds,but will take small animals and carrion. They live in large heirarchal troops ruled by dominant males. The troops can contain 250 individuals.
