Indri (Indri indri) in a tree. This is the largest of the lemurs, its body reaching 90 centimetres in length. It lives in the rainforests of north- eastern Madagascar, feeding on fruits, leaves and flowers. The indri lives in small groups of between 3 and 5 individuals. Its loud call, which can be heard from over a mile away,is used to advertise the presence of the group to other lemurs. The destruction of the indri's habitat has led to a rapid decline in its population numbers. Photographed in the Analamazaotra or Perinet Special Reserve,Madagascar | |
