Kangaroo. 1777 engraving of a kangaroo (family Macropodidae),a marsupial native to Australia. Kangaroos are plant-eaters that usually live in herds. Most species are nocturnal, sheltering by rocky outcrops during the heat of the day and emerging at night to feed and drink. Their powerful hind legs are adapted for hopping: adults of the largest species can clear nine metres in a single leap. The young are only centimetres when born and develop in a pouch on the mother's abdomen. This engraving first appeared in a book describing the voyages of Captain James Cook (1728-29),the pioneering explorer who mapped Australia and claimed its east coast for Britain | |
