Northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) perched on a branch. This is a male,distinguished by its brightly coloured plumage. The female is a more dull brown. This bird inhabits woodland and scrub in eastern North America,from southern Canada to northern Mexico. It may reach a length of over 20 centimetres.
