American robin chicks (Turdus migratorius) peering out of the nest. These birds are common throughout North America, living in woodland as well as in more built-up areas. They tend to breed and nest in the more northern parts of their range, migrating south during the winter. They typically lay three or four eggs, which take around two weeks to hatch. The chicks spend about two weeks in the nest, being fed by the mother. American robins eat fruit, slugs, snails and insects. They may reach around 25 centimetres in length. They are not true robins, instead being members of the thrush family. Photographed in British Columbia,Canada | |
