American robin mother and chicks. View of an American robin (Turdus migratorius) with her chicks at their nest. This bird is common throughout North America, living in woodland as well as in more built-up areas. They tend to breed and nest in the more northern parts of their range, migrating south during the winter. They typically lay three or four eggs, which take around two weeks to hatch. They eat fruit, slugs, snails and insects, and prefer to feed on the ground. They may reach around 25 centimetres in length. They are not true robins, instead being members of the thrush family.
