Western meadowlark. View of a western meadowlark (Sturnella neglecta) singing. This bird lives throughout western North America in grasslands, and feeds almost exclusively on insects, although some seeds are also taken. Birds in the northernmost parts of the range tend to migrate further south for the winter. The birds often congregate in small flocks when feeding, which they do by disturbing the soil with their bills, and eating any insects they unearth. This bird is displaying its winter plumage. Their backs turn black and white in the summer. Photographed in Colorado,USA | |
