Great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) on a log in the snow. This bird inhabits deciduous and coniferous woodland and is the most common and widespread British woodpecker,often visiting garden bird tables. It can grow up to 26 centimetres in length. In summer it feeds on insects and their larvae,using its beak and tongue to extract them from crevices in trees. In winter it feeds on fruit,seeds and nuts. Photographed in March in Kent,UK | |
