Whitefronted bee-eaters (Merops bullockoides),perching on a branch. These colourful birds are highly social. They nest in colonies in the banks of rivers and streams. Populations are organised into extended family units called clans, typically consisting of two or three mated pairs and a few single birds. They exhibit co-operative breeding: non-breeding members of a clan help others to reproduce, sharing in digging the nesting chamber and feeding and incubating the young. Whitefronted bee-eaters are found from Kenya to South Africa. Photographed in the Okavango Delta,Botswana | |
