Malachite kingfisher research. Researcher using pliers to fix an identifying ring on the ankle of a malachite kingfisher (Alcedo or Corythornis cristata). The bird was caught in a net and then measured and weighed. It is now being ringed before its release. This basic research adds to the available information about a bird species, such as its distribution and numbers. The ringing enables an individual's movements to be tracked if it is caught again. The tiny malachite kingfisher lives around water, hunting fish and water insects. It is found within sub-Saharan Africa. Photographed in the Paarl Bird Sanctuary,South Africa | |
