Masked lapwing and chick (Vanellus miles). This wading bird is native to Australia but is also found in New Zealand. It prefers wetland and coastal habitats but has adapted well to arid and urban environments. The masked lapwing makes its nest on the ground and will viciously attack intruders to protect its territory and young. The chick will often stay with the parents for 1-2 years.
