Kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla) sitting on its nest. This small gull is found in the Arctic,North Atlantic and North Pacific Oceans. It lives on the open sea much of the year,only coming ashore to breed. It builds its nest from mud,grass and seaweed on coastal cliffs. The female lays between two to three eggs that are incubated for 25 days. The kittiwake can grow up to 40 centimetres in length. Photographed in June in Northumberland,UK | |
