Black skimmers (Rhynchops niger) on a beach. This seabird inhabits coastal regions of North and South America, with northern populations heading to tropical regions during the winter. It takes its name from its unusual feeding technique: it flies low over the water surface with its elongated lower mandible skimming through the water. When it touches a fish or crustacean it snaps its bill shut, capturing its prey. The black skimmer can reach a length of around 50 centimetres, with a 125 centimetre wingspan.
