Least tern (Sterna antillarum) hunting for fish over water. This seabird hunts by flying over the water looking for a fish, then diving on it to catch it in its bill,a technique called plunge diving. The least tern is found around coasts and inland waterways across much of North America. Some consider it the same species as the Eurasian little tern (S. albifrons). It is a migrant, spending the summer months in northern temperate latitudes, but heading to tropical areas during the winter. The least tern can reach a wingspan of nearly 50 centimetres and a length of 25 centimetres, making it one of the smallest of the terns. Photographed in Florida,USA | |
