Southern skua (Catharacta antarctica) in flight. This large predatory seabird feeds on fish as well as hunting smaller seabirds, scavenging for food and preying on the eggs and young of other flying seabirds. It is found in the subantarctic region, and so will also attack the young and eggs of penguins. Another feeding tactic is to chase other seabirds and harass them into disgorging fish that they have swallowed. The span of the wings can be over 1.5 metres. The exact taxonomy of the skuas is uncertain. Photographed over Bird Island,South Georgia, southern Atlantic Ocean | |
