American avocets. View of two American avocets (Recurvirostra americana) flying over water. These birds are migrants, spending the breeding season around inland waters in western North America, and travelling to more southern coastal areas in winter. These birds are displaying breeding plumage. In the winter, the rust-coloured plumage around their head and chest is replaced by grey colouration. They feed by sweeping their long, upturned bill through shallow water and submerged mud trying to root out aquatic invertebrates. They may reach a length of around 40 centimetres.
