Willow ptarmigan. View of a willow ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus) in grassland. Willow ptarmigans are inhabitants of woods, moors and tundra throughout northern Eurasia and northern North America. They eat berries, leaves and buds and also some insects. They are protected from the cold in their habitat by a thick layer of insulating feathers. In winter, their plumage turns white to provide camouflage amongst the snow, just as this mottled brown plumage provides camouflage amongst shrubs. They live in large flocks after the breeding season, and are a favourite prey of foxes and wolves,as well as being a favourite game bird amongst humans | |
