Pygmy owls. View of two pygmy owls (Glaucidium gnoma) peering from their nest in a hole in a tree. These tiny owls live in forests in mountainous areas of western North America. They reach a maximum length of around 15 centimetres, and hunt small rodents and insects. They nest in holes in trees, often using an old woodpecker hole. They spend most of their time perched in branches on the lookout for prey. They are more active by day than the majority of owls, but tend to be noisily mobbed when they appear by other small birds which share their habitat.
