Red-shouldered hawk (Buteo lineatus) on a perch. This species of hawk breeds throughout the eastern and north eastern United States into southern Canada and west of the Sierra Nevada in California. They inhabit mature mixed or deciduous woodland,nesting near dead trees where they can enjoy an unobstructed view of the forest floor.
