Cape vulture (Gyps coprotheres),also called the Cape griffon. This large vulture lives in mountainous country in southern Africa. It nests in colonies on mountainsides. Like all vultures,it feeds mainly on carrion. The bare head and neck allow it to probe inside carcasses of large mammals without becoming coated in blood. It has a stong hooked beak to tear through the skin and rip off chunks of meat. Photographed at Giant's Castle game reserve,South Africa | |
