Galapagos hawks. Adult galapagos hawk (Buteo galapagoensis) feeding its chick in a nest. Galapagos hawks lay up to three eggs, which are incubated for 38 days. The chicks remain in the nest for up to 60 days, fed by their parents, until they grow their flight feathers. They are carnivorous, feeding on a wide variety of prey that includes lizards, doves, iguanas and even small goats. Female hawks are larger than the males, growing up to 0.5m high, with a wingspan of 1.2m. Native to the Galapagos islands, they are endangered due to farmers hunting them as they pose a threat to poultry and livestock. Photograph on the Galapagos Islands,Ecuador | |
