Vultures feeding. Group of white-backed vultures (Gyps africanus) feeding on an elephant carcass. Vultures use their long hooked beaks to tear through the skin of dead animals and rip off chunks of flesh. They have fewer feathers on their heads to prevent them from becoming coated in blood as they feed on the internal organs. Vultures live in open country, circling high above the ground as they search for corpses, such as those of large herd-forming mammals. Their digestive system also enables them to safely eat decaying meat. Photographed in the Mala Mala Game Reserve,South Africa | |
